I could barely contain my excitement this week when our new tech packs arrived. My first tech packs were completed in March last year – I actually can’t believe it – over a year ago! I produced them in a bit of a mish-mashed way: I hired a designer to complete my CADs (I sent her garments as guides), I did a lot of the measurement work myself (thinking I hope this fits someone!) and then sent them out to start ‘courting’ manufacturers.
Looking back, it’s one of those things I had to do to prove I was serious. Having a tech pack is a bit of an industry requirement when it comes to producing clothing. Saying this, one of the most annoying things I found trying to select the correct template and put one together. There isn’t actually a recognised industry standard. There are basic components which really should be included, but everyone pretty much has their own format.
Why get my manufacturers to produce them this time round?
Those March 2019 tech packs were useful for finding a manufacturer. However, since settling on one, I’ve decided it would be best for them to draw up new tech packs. I had a couple of reasons for this:
Some of my designs had changed since the original tech packs
Some fabric choices and printing methods had changed based on what we discussed when I went to meet the manufacturers
(Key point) I wanted tech packs that the manufacturers I was working with were comfortable with. If you haven’t noticed (no really…you must have by now…) I’m new to this production life. I thought if they produce the tech packs and grade the sizes, I can approve the design and details but at least I know there won’t be a break down in communication in terms of what the tech pack is actually saying. Remember these packs are the master blueprint for the final garments. They contain all the necessary details to produce the finished product.
So they’re done! And my samples and prototypes are in the works too. I’m hoping I’ll be able to share some images – maybe even some real life garments – with you soon.
Hooray! Our trademark certificate came through. Back in December I wrote about how it had taken a while for me to get round to filing for a trademark at with the Intellectual Property Office (IPO). In early March, the trademark was approved, and I received the paper work a few weeks ago. I was nervous …
This is a question I’ve asked myself more times than I’d like to admit. It tends to be more of an appearance question for me. I like to think I’m bold and ‘out there’ but then I look at the me I’ve presented to the world over the last 15 years or so compared to …
Working on Mummy’s Muse is great. It means I always have something to think about. I mean, it’s not like I have a shortage of things to think about having two small children, however, this is something more interesting than the routine of every day life. It’s something I’m trying to build and really care …
