Earlier this year – February to be precise – I realised it was time to get my products on some babies and toddlers!
Any one who partakes in even a little e-commerce will realise that you need to see the products on people to get a better feel for them. So I had to work out how to find these incredible little people and how to photograph them. I have lots of friends with beautiful and spirited little people and many of them offered to help me out. They’re wonderful like that. However, I want to use these photos for marketing and I felt that it would be better if there was a formal agreement.
I wasn’t ready (money, range of products, time) to have my own shoot. This is something I would LOVE to do one day – probably when I have enough products to make the costs make sense. To find a quick work around, I discovered and used the site StarNow to find talent. StarNow was great because parents/guardians of the toddlers were able to take the photos I needed from the comfort of their own homes. I sent the products to them, with some instructions on how I wanted the photos taken, they sent me the photos and I paid. I did send a contract discussing usage; it was very standard and I suspect these children do lots of modelling and or acting work, so there was no problem in that department.
What did I learn?
It was an overall positive experience and I’ve been able to use the photos across my site and social media. I think it’s quite hard to standardise the photos if you don’t take them all in one place. I think in future, should I repeat this process, I will send examples of what I want the photos to look like. An example to work off is often easier than a written brief.
A quick post today. I’m currently awaiting samples of one garment from a number of manufacturers in different countries: India, Vietnam and Morocco to name a few.
