One product, many colourways vs. one colourway, many products.
This month has been about establishing which 4 or 5 products I’m going to build my first range around. Initially I had the idea of only going with one item and producing it in many different colourways and designs. Since then for a number or reasons, I’ve decided to produce more of range of products to begin with.
There are certain fixed costs and effort that come with creating each additional garment, however I’ve decided it will make Mummy’s Muse feel more like a serious babywear brand from day one. It’ll also help with creating mix and match gifting bundles. Also – on a really pragmatic level – it will help me learn which products people seem to want more of by watching what sells.
It’s a pretty basic range in terms of design, the patterns and colour combinations are where the real magic happens. I’ve worked with a designer to put these CAD illustrations together.
The most exciting part of the process so far
I’m now at the point where I’m combining print designs in different colours with these illustrations to build the final first range. It’s taken so long. I’m already thinking about the cycle of developing subsequent ranges and what needs to be quicker next time round.
The exciting part about doing this for the first time is that I’ve entered into a whole world of knowledge around colour and design which I had no idea existed. I’ve always liked colour and thought I have a good eye for it. Like so many things in life, a natural flair can be developed with some real tried and tested techniques and plenty of practice! I think I’ll write more about colour generally in upcoming posts, but it’s been so exciting for me.
Sometimes the process of getting this off the ground feels like just a series of steps and such a slog. It’s really easy for me to forget why I started this journey in the first place. However, getting into the colour work has been a breath of fresh air. It’s making me take an even closer look at the world around me in terms of colour and pattern combinations. I’m loving the colours that occur organically via nature. It’s a new frontier for me and one I’m looking forward to delving further into.
As I sat down to write this, I thought, is this going to be a really dry post? However, I cant’ let that stop me. I’m trying my best to be honest about what I’ve been up to, even if it doesn’t seem like the most exciting thing from the outside. I hope at least …
This is the post I’ve known I needed to write for the longest time, but I’ve finally plucked up the courage to write. I’d like to introduce myself, the ‘Mummy’ in Mummy’s Muse. My name is Yewande, I’m 32 and I live in London. I’m married and I have two incredible daughters. Watching them – …
I could write a whole series about doing ‘x’ consistently is hard – especially when it comes to this business. Writing is definitely one of the top 3. I write because I want to document this process and honestly so I can look back one day and remember how I felt as I was starting. …
