This Pandemic has shown me that dreams can be heightened, strengthened and even birthed during times of crisis.
Your Girl is back.
If you recall from my last post I was in a funk about having to wait and things not happening when I thought they would and should happen. That post was over three months ago. Shortly after that post, things started moving again, I had a delivery date for my tech packs and prototypes, I felt – yes, this is finally going to happen.
And then… the Pandemic happened. We’ve all had to re-orientate, re-organise and basically re-imagine life. I’ll talk more about the logistic implications of the Pandemic on production in another post. However, what this sudden lockdown has given me – and so many others – is time to think. Stressful commutes, trips to the gym and play dates have been replaced by time for introspection.
As we ‘grow up’, I think we ‘grow out’ of dreaming. If you’ve been reading for some time now you’ll know that Mummy’s Muse is all about celebrating the uninhibited nature of small people through bold colours and prints. I thought to myself I believe in this brand and it’s mission, I need to live it for myself.
In the past it’s seemed really arrogant to me to take time to dream. It’s also uncomfortable. I’ve previously been highly irritated by the ‘Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?’ question. It makes me uncomfortable because I start to connect dots and what it may take to be somewhere and I feel like, is this too much? Is this too little? And then the I’m faced with my own humanity and find myself praying, ‘God let me please be here in 10 years,’ then the whole thing sort of falls apart.
I took some time to do it recently, prompted by a training session I attended (virtually) and it had such a profound effect on me. Dreams should be boundless. That’s why they’re called dreams and not plans. It was freeing. I dreamt big…and I dreamt specific. This wasn’t some new age, speak it into existence type thing, it’s more like, say what you want. Hear yourself say it. Allow yourself to feel good seeing yourself achieving it (does all sound a bit new age now when I write it down – ha) I think this is the first step in really, truly, making it happen.
I was then reminded of some great advice in a poem I love. The Late, Great Mr Hughes tells us to ‘Hold fast to our dreams.’ You have to have a dream to have something to hold on to. So pandemic or no pandemic, I’m holding fast to my dreams. I’ve named them, told them and given them to God. If dreams die or dreams go, I suspect that life is no where near as rich an experience as everyone has the right for it to be.
One product, many colourways vs. one colourway, many products. This month has been about establishing which 4 or 5 products I’m going to build my first range around. Dreams Can Survive A Pandemic

Dreams
BY LANGSTON HUGHES
Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.
Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.
