I’m currently back in the design process. I’m working on new prints and colourways. Whoa..that’s great, but you haven’t even released your existing designs I hear you say. You’re correct. However this is one of the most time consuming, best and worst parts of this whole process. Nonetheless, it’s a part I care deeply about.
I love it because I love colour and a big part of my energy comes from the challenges and questions that arise from combining colours together. I detest it because…Photoshop. I’m not a native Photoshop ‘speaker’. I will admit it’s getting better, but in the early days it really made any sort of colour work really challenging. I’ll write more about this at a later date.
I’ve decided to work on some new prints and colourways in response to this post. When things are slower, I’ve started to challenge myself on what work can be done to prepare for busier times (*prayer hands*). I would hate to have to produce more prints under pressure. I’m constantly collecting inspiration for colour combinations, however it’s not a process to be rushed. For me, it’s one to be savoured and enjoyed. There are entire institutions dedicated to the art and science of colour – I completely get this now! Pantone is probably the most notable of them all.
I enjoy sitting at a desk, with some music, no screaming children and a clear head. I can easily play with colour combinations for hours. I’m not really working on any new garment/product designs at the moment – though I’m literally bursting at the seams with new ideas. I imagine I’ll begin with print variations before going into variations of products, but then again who knows?
As I wait for fabric to be sourced to produce new samples, I’ve found myself building out cost models – again. It made me realise how honest you have to be with yourself to build these models. Models that account for all of your costs pre-sale. It’s SO easy to not account for everything. When …
