Spirited, lively, fun-loving, jolly…even frisky are all synonyms for the word playful. This is the second of four Mummy’s Muse brand values I’m writing about and one that has only become more important to me in my personal life as I’ve gotten older and life has become busier.
Born This Way
I’ve always been playful. I have two sisters and we’re all wired that way. Having siblings who are playful will lead you down a lifelong path of trying to ‘up your game.’ as well as forever getting into trouble. There was a time my sister locked me in a suitcase because I told her I was sure I would fit. This is playful gone wrong…however you get the idea. We believe life shouldn’t be taken too seriously because most of what we agonise over is pointless at the end of the day. If you have nothing in this world, you will still have a personality, your point of view – and importantly – how you make others feel when they’re around you. Why not make people smile?
This value is integral to the DNA of this brand and this journey. ‘Yewande, are we having fun here?’ Is a question I’ll ask myself especially when I’m a bit down, things are hard or things are slow. If the answer is no, I look for a way to inject more joy into the journey. I had one of these moments of questioning recently and I think I’ll talk about how I addressed it in my next post.
Play as a Remedy
Since having not one, but two, highly spirited little people, my opportunities for raw, unfiltered play have exponentially risen. Everyone knows that children like to play. No surprises there. However, what I love is their willingness to drop everything – at any time of the day – to play. I love it. They’d rather engage in real life play with me than watch a screen, any day. Obviously they’re better rested than me, so have more energy, but I’m on the floor rolling around most days and I’m here for it.
Lately work has been really REALLY busy for me. It’s easy for those without children to feel sorry for me because I’m doing all this work and then I have to feed children, clean them, keep them alive etc. I won’t lie, sone days I get to the end of the work day and wonder where am I actually going to find the strength to ‘Mummy’? And then to probably head back to working once they’re asleep. However it’s such a blessing for me and antithesis to the massive amounts of stress I’m feeling to roll on the floor and pretend we’re wriggly worms after a long day of spreadsheets. I think it’s safe to say the harder I’ve worked in this season, the more I’ve played (the more I’ve also felt like I needed to sleep for a week…but we keep going).
A Playful Place
One day, when Mummy’s Muse is a RAGING SUCCESS, I want people to know this brand as Playful place in a world that’s not all fun and games. I want you to think of an energetic, spirited, positive and fun place. As with all the values I write about, I’ll need to work out how this translates into what we make and how we do things. This one will be joy to make real.
Considered is the third of our brand values I’ve written about. I’ve written about the fact that Mummy’s Muse is Rooted and Playful, so what does it mean to be Considered? This is the Value I know I needed, but didn’t know how to describe it. Other words that came close were tasteful, thoughtful, intentional …
The fourth and final value in the Mummy’s Muse Values Series is Uninhibited. I am not Uninhibited. This is OK and it isn’t. Some inhibitions are very necessary, they protect us and keep us safe. However, I believe we take on others as we try to conform to societal norms. I think there are others …
Values; Principles; Guidelines; Our Compass – however you choose to describe the concept, it can’t be ignored. Our values are so important to Mummy’s Muse because I feel like there’s a very clear and strong personality I’m trying to create with this brand. These values act as a bit of a checklist for everything we …
