I used to think a big part of starting a business was secrecy. Keeping your cards close to your chest; not saying too much, too soon, too loud. Since starting Mummy’s Muse, I’ve found the polar opposite to be true – it’s good to talk. Beyond good, it’s really beneficial.
I guess my initial hesitation around talking was that someone faster, more experienced and more creative would beat me to it. That while I was still stumbling around, learning the difference between GSM and FOB that someone would swoop in and make my dreams their reality. I’ve since become a bit more philosophical about the whole thing. This could still happen, however that’s why I’m trying to do a good job of differentiating Mummy’s Muse. I want it to be more than an exceptional product, but also an incredible brand.
The second reason I was hesitant to talk was simply fear. The more people I spoke to, the more I’d be exposing myself to my favourite question. I just thought if I keep quiet until I’m a huge success, whenever I’m asked the question I’d be more than happy to wax lyrical about the life and times of a big shot entrepreneur.
A good friend of mine gave me the advice to speak. He told me to tell everyone I meet about Mummy’s Muse (still working on the everyone part). And he was right, the more I talk, the more I get to practice my pitch. You need to be able to say what you do and why you do it pretty quickly. The more I talk, the more encouragement I get – sometimes from absolute strangers. It validates for me that the world would be a better place with my products. The more I talk, the more I start to grow an incredible network of creators and doers that I never thought I’d have. It’s safe to say I’ve embraced talking about Mummy’s Muse. I just need to practice doing it more.
A big dilemma for me starting out on this journey is what to do in terms of marketing and communication before I actually have a product to sell. I’ve struggled with this because I thought, ‘Is this weird? To talk about a brand where no product exists?’ I’ve been waiting for ages, ‘What if I …
